What goes up must come down (AKA An obsession with those little arrows on Facebook)

It has to be said I'm not the most technologically advanced person in the world (as you may have noticed!). I've fumbled my way through Facebook and bodged together a blog (thanks for stopping by) and even set up my own retail empire (OK - maybe not so much an empire but with the help of Folksy I am a bona fide shopkeeper!).

But Facebook still flummoxes me! Is it just me or are other folks addicted to a daily check (I have been known to do it more frequently!) of those little green and red arrows.

Now, to be quite honest - I have no idea what they really mean. All I know is that I love it when they are all green and hate it when they are all red! But the problem with them all being green is you know that sooner or later what goes up.....has to come down!

And as if that wasn't enough to obsess over there's now 'talking about' - have no idea what 'talking about' is about (despite Hilary 'Haptree' Pullen's best efforts to explain it for me!), but last week 26 people were talking about me and then it started going down - 25, 24,.....panic! What am I doing wrong!

I think I'm now learning to live with the daily changes and am starting to wean myself off the obsession. But I would like to apologise to the 3 people who i must have offended in some way when they 'unliked' me on the 13th October!

Bag to crafting for next weeks Handmade Monday - and who knows....maybe even a purse tutorial!

  1. I am as confused as you about those little arrows! I know they must mean something important, but they still baffle me! I have liked your facebook page, just to add more confusion to the numbers! :) x

  2. Helen I do exactly the same as you on my website statistics. The number of visitors kept going up and up and I celebrated when I saw a 1000% increase in traffic to my site but sadly for the last 3 weeks I have been in minus figures. I really have no idea what it is that has stopped people visiting but hey it is exciting checking out those statistics! I'm about to go and 'like' your site so it will have gone up by at least 1 by the next time you look :-)

  3. When I think I have it all figured out, they change something! I've pretty much stopped looking at those arrows and just keep plugging along. :)

  4. I've never seen those on facebook before, I haven't set up a facebook business page yet though so that's probably why. I find i'm addicted to checking the number of visits to my blog and number of followers and smiling like an idiot when it increases.
I wouldn't worry about the 3 that unliked your page, i'm sure there's plenty of people waiting to take their place. x

  5. I can definately identify with you. You have all my sympathy. It is nice for me to have followers but as I sell nothing keeping known in the big virtual world is not important so I don't try. Perhaps I should. When you finally get to grips with it all I may come back and pick your brains. lol.

  6. I'm avoiding facebook fan pages, I don't understand how to use them effectively and I can't see that they've bought me any extra business - but that's just me. You certainly seem to have the hang of it though.

  7. Dearest Helen

Thanks so much for your comments on my blog, sorry for the late reply, I have been meaning to send you my email: it's violetsandvelvet@gmail.com , I have managed to collect a couple of bits for our exciting swap this weekend. It's a nice stress free bit of fun in the build up to Christmas. Please could you let me know your postal address too. Thanks.

Regarding facebook, I am not a great fan. I did have an account a while back so I could share photos with family but then it just got out of hand with "friends" whom I hardly knew and girls I had been to school with over 20 years ago wanting to be my friend when they hadn't bothered with me when I was at school. So for self preservation I packed it in. I do, however see that it can be useful in many ways, especially when you have your own business.
Have a very blessed and happy week ahead xox Penelope

  9. I think they change for nothing better to do, you just get used to one format switch on an guess what changed again and sometimes not for the better.

  12. I know just what you mean. It's ridiculous to go into a decline when the numbers drop on on FB or someone 'unfollows' on Twitter, but I go into agonies of thinking 'What did I DOOO!, What did I say'! Quite demoralising!

  13. Ha, funny you should be blogging about Facebook - I blogged along similar lines over the weekend. Got to say, you are much more ahead than me ... and I'm fumbling around in the dark a bit. Thankfully, I don't make to sell at the minute so its ok for it to be a steep learning curve!

  14. I get with my blog views on my days off so if I had a facebook page I would be glued to it wondering when its gonna change. I get where your coming from. However, remember, what goes up must come down... until the wind pushes it back up again ;)

  15. Not gone down the Facebook route (and don't plan to in a hurry either!) so I can't help with the arrows but have learnt with my website stats to not get too bogged down by them as they will drive you insane!

  16. I have my facebook page and it's great for photo albums etc, I have sold direct from FB but I don't understand the 'talking about' either, I don't bother with the stats too much but I do know that if I'm on the Craft Forum or Folksy Forum my stats go up. We all like having a nosey don't we!

  18. there's whole lot of stuff just just gotta ignore or you go nuts. To be honest I hadn't noticed the little arrows! As long as I understand the basics then I'm happy

  19. LOL! I thought it was just me! Mine are all red today :(

Yesteray they were all green so you are right what goes uo must come down...I have 137 people talking about me...problem is they could be saying that A Little Told Me - her stuff's rubbish and it would still count...my ears are burning red like the little arrows. Time to step away from the rankings!

  20. I couldn't work Facebook - I tried, failed miserably, then abandoned it. I can only just keep up with the blog, though, so maybe it's for the best! Good Luck with it though!

  21. That all must be something special you get with a business Face Book page? I am a FB addict, but only just a regular user, so I have never seen any of that stuff. Wow, you are cool, you can track all that! :) And do you Pinterest and Tweet too? ;) I am starting to find that I spend so much time social networking that I'm not finding time to actually craft! LOL

  22. Ooo - I do Pinterest too - it's how I do my Folksy Friday, love that it is very cool

  23. Facebook isn't my favourite site - I can't get my head round it to be honest. I've forgiven myself for that and spend more time on the sites I do enjoy. I stay on nodding terms with FB and maybe one day we'll be best buddies. Not holding my breath though!
