Home Sweet Home at Handbags by Helen HQ

It's been a slooooow week for making things at HbyH HQ - but not without it's excitement. Well, that depends on if you find carpets exciting or not! I didn't think I did - but that's before I spent 8 years without them. It's not like we even had nicely sanded floorboards - we just moved in, threw out the old carpet (you know the kind of thing - red and brown large print from the seventies!)
......and just never got around to replacing them. Until NOW!

The worst thing about having all your floors done at once is that you have to move your entire contents somewhere else. We split the installation over two days - but even so it was quite startling to see the amount of 'stuff' myself and Mr HbyH have accumulated over the years! So several trips to the tip later, and after depositing a huuuuuuge bag of items at the local charity shop, we are almost back to normal.

My fabric stash has had a good tidy.
And my vintage atlas sewing machine is the star of the spare bedroom.

And I did find a bit of time to make some progress on my latest custom order. The brief was something a little ordinary, grey and subtle looking on the outside - but with a wow on the inside. So I've made a start on a couple of bags which might fit the bill.

Time to mooch around other folks at Handmade Monday - I try to make sure I visit everyone who posts a link.

  1. We are in the same situation with carpets. Having some laid, dreading moving the big bookcases! Well I think you've completed the brief very well and she should be pleased with the extra wow factor hidden inside.

  7. Glad to hear it's all cosy underfoot. I don't envy all your furniture moving. I spillover into the rest of the house if I'm only decorating one room. Love the pink fabric inside the 'ordinary' bag.

  8. Well done on the stash tidy - when I have a sort out I am always amazed at things I find that I had completely forgotten about. Your bag is lovely and the lining is so pretty.

  9. Oh I remember the carpeting the whole house thing - did it once when I was heavily pregnant, great as everyone else had to do the shifting furniture from one room to another! The bag's looking great, grey and pink are such a lovely combination.

    1. ooo, that was brave, getting the carpets done whilst pregnant - but obviously had its perks!

  11. Always nice to get your house back in order after having anything done. Seems we do floors every time we move, either recarpeting, redoing wood, whatever. But it's always worth it. :)
As for the bags, love that sweet pink floral on the inside of the gray bag. Very nice.

    1. I bought it a while ago on the basis i thought it would go through thick fabrics. It does - but struggles a bit on straps and is sooooo heavy to move. So it doesn't quite do what i bought it for but....it looks so pretty i just couldn't send it back!

  13. I don't think it would be possible to move anything in my house if I wanted new carpets. There's just not enough room :-D

  16. Hi Helen, I've just joined in with Handmade Monday for the first time, so I'm discovering loads of lovely new blogs today :-) I love your bags - especially the pink lined one! I know what you mean about the carpet - we did something similar, but isn't it a wonderful feeling once it's down? Simmi x
